Convent Comission – Badminton Posts

Course: Design Studio at Orvieto – Form, Function and Spatial Significance

For the final project of my design studio in Orvieto, we were tasked with creating a functional item for a the convent we were living in. We had to consider how this item would honor the tradition and history of convent life, while benefiting the shared experience of the space.

Inspired by my cohort’s love for playing badminton in our free time, I proposed a set of badminton net posts that would enhance the set up that we had. My goal was to achieve both functionality and push the aesethetics of what a conventional badminton post looks like. To ensure that there would be enough counterweight to hold the tension of the net, a triangular frame was made out of sturdier wood blocks for the base, and two brace tenons were placed on both sides of the post. For portability, wheels were bolted on the back, enabling the posts to be tilted and carted to different locations. As the entire post was made out of wood, clear varnish was applied to ensure that it is well-suited for the outdoors.
