“Notice what you notice” - Side Table

Course: Design Studio at Orvieto – Form, Function, and Spatial Significance

In my third month of studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy, my design studio professor challenged us to slow down and observe the spaces we inhibit. “Notice what you notice”. Using the inspiration we gathered from this practice, we were tasked with creating a wooden table of any size and function, so long as it included 2 joints, is able to carry a load of 50lbs and utilizes the limited material given.

Inspired from details found in Italian architect – Carlo Scarpa’s designs, to simple things like door grates, I decided to build a side table that looked simple, yet complex in design. I made mortise and tenon joints to connect the two legs to the top, and finger joints to connect the other side. While it functions like any other side table, I wanted it to also have a space for books in the bottom shelf.
