“Zucchine”

Course: Intaglio Printmaking

1/6 in the edition
Working proof

“Zucchine”, which means zucchini in Italian, is a copper etching print I made in my Intaglio printmaking course. The image was developed from a photograph I had taken in Orvieto, Italy, where I was first fascinated by the abstract patterns found in the zucchini pizza made by our brilliant chef - Maria.

In the first state, I experimented with scratching into soft ground to build up the structure of my image. After a 30 minute etch in the acid, I was pleased to find interesting textures and softer marks that resembled graphite within the plate.

In the following state, I used a whistler to scratch into hard ground. The goal was to create darker lines, a greater sense of contrast and structure. Then, I added aquatint to create more value in the shapes. After getting the plate to a point that I liked through several rounds of scraping and burnishing, I pulled an edition of 6.
